Some Tricks of the Floral Arrangement Trade

There’s a knack to doing everything in life and that includes the pretty things, like creating your own flower arrangements. How can you best show off what you have and create harmony within the room? For one thing, get rid of your in-laws standing behind you, and for another consider the following suggestions.

To establish the overall shape of the floral arrangement, start with whatever greenery you have. Place the largest flowers first and the fillers last. Crisscross the stems of greens to help give support to the flowers. Add aromatic herbs to help along those flowers with little scent. Mint, dill, sage and basil are good combinations, but don’t get carried away and think you are in the kitchen.

To ensure maximum impact of your arrangement (we are talking head-on collision here), place the flowers in the most visible area of a room such as an entryway or the dining room. In this manner, the first thing your guests will notice is the scent wafting from your chosen bouquet. In the words of Martha Stewart, this “is a good thing.”

Consider the vase you are using for your arrangement, for, alas, it has feelings too. Give it more stability by filling it with pebbles or florist marbles. Many vases can’t accommodate the longer stemmed flowers; cut them down to a manageable length and apologize later. Open tight flowers and buds by standing them in a bucket of warm water. Some may respond better than others but don’t panic if they do not respond. No lifeguard will ever be necessary. Be aware that you will most likely have better luck in this regard with lilies, roses and gladiolas. For maximum effect, place a floral arrangement in front of a mirror to double its impact.

Be creative and dare to take the colorful plunge! Your flowers will thank you for it and you don’t even have to get wet!
