Maybe you already set aside an evening regularly to watch movies as a family. This can be a fun way to spend some extra time together. You can take turns selecting movies or have a movie marathon, allowing each family member to select a favorite. This time of year it might be fun to sit down together and watch classic holiday specials.
You can rent movies, go pay per view, view movies you already have copies of, or choose from those available in your TV listings. You can make special treats or snacks or have “party food” instead of a regular dinner to make the entire evening feel special.
Here’s a Twist:
Another fun idea is to watch homemade movies together. Pile up some pillows and blankets and get comfy. Watch those great family videos that you’ve made together over the years from everyday life to birthdays, holidays, and other special occasions. Mom and Dad might get a little emotional from time to time seeing how much the kids have grown and changed. Children will enjoy watching themselves on TV and also tend to be quite perceptive regarding the many changes in the home and family. My kids are especially fond of the videos from when they were babies.
Another Twist
You can also make a game with family videos. It’s nearly the same as one of those “what’s wrong with this picture?” games, where you view two pictures and point out or write down all the differences. When you play it with family videos, you look to see how many things have changed in your home, your yard, or a particular room. You can also note the differences in each person, such as long hair, short hair, growing taller, losing a tooth, gaining a new tooth…
*Make sure you to add to your family video collection during this holiday season. We like to watch our tapes of Christmas mornings from previous years each Christmas Eve.
