Somewhere in Time (1980)

timeChristopher Reeve is most commonly known for his starring role in the “Superman” movies, but in no film was he as charming, handsome and romantic than “Somewhere in Time.

He plays Richard Collier, a playwright who staged his first production while in college. After the performance, an elderly woman approaches him, presses a pocket watch into his hand, and says, “Come back to me.”

He’s confused but curious. Unable to figure out who she was, he goes forward with his life, producing plays and having some success. But one day, feeling the strain of writer’s block, he goes out for a short road trip and finds himself pulling into the Grand Hotel. He likes the look of the place and decides to stay the night, and takes a look inside the Hall of History that is in the lobby. The hotel has kept memorabilia from some of their most famous guests, and he is absolutely captivated by a picture of a young woman hanging on the wall. He is told that she is Elise McKenna, a famous stage actress who used to stay at the hotel in the early 1900s.

Unable to stop thinking about her, Richard goes to the library to learn more about her. She starred in several plays and had a brilliant career, but at some point after 1912, she went into seclusion and never acted again. He turned the page to come face to face with a photograph of her in her later years, and was shocked to see that she was the elderly woman who gave him the pocket watch all those years before. What’s more, she passed away the night after she visited him.

This leads Richard into a quest for ways to time travel, and after much research, he is actually successful into taking himself back to 1912. Although his first introduction to Elise (Jane Seymour) gets off to a rocky start, soon they are good friends, and then lovers, and he is determined to spend the rest of his life living in her time, with her. But then a trick of fate forces them apart.

This movie is one of the most romantic ever made. From a logical standpoint, okay, a lot of it doesn’t make sense, but who cares. Suspend logic for an hour and forty-four minutes and just be willing to believe.

There is a scene of mild sensuality, and you can prescreen to decide for yourself if it’s all right for your household, but it’s nothing that would burn your eyeballs off. (I actually thought it was pretty tasteful.) This movie also contains my very favorite movie kiss of all time, and I’ll tell you where so you can watch out for it. It’s right after their afternoon out together, and he’s taken her back to her room, right before her manager knocks on the door. Oh, so sweet and tender.

As you can tell, I’m a “Somewhere in Time” fanatic, and I’m willing to bet that if you have a romantic bone in your body, you will be too. Oh, and you’ll definitely want to check out the gorgeous “Somewhere in Time” website.

This film is rated PG.
