Do you have an ancestor who served in World War II? There is now a lineage based genealogical society that you can join. The Sons and Daughters of World War II Veterans was designed for people who can prove family ancestry and lineage from an American WWII Veteran.
There are some genealogical societies that require members to prove that their ancestor served in a certain war. The Daughters of the American Revolution is one example of these types of organizations.
The Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) will only accept members who are female, and who are at least eighteen years of age. The woman must be able to prove lineal descent from an ancestor who was a patriot of the American Revolution.
A woman will be asked to show specific marriage, death, and birth certificates that prove that she truly is related to a person who either served in the military during the American Revolution, or that helped with that fight.
The Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) will only accept members who are male, and who are at least eighteen years of age. As you might expect, a man has to be able to show proof that he is related to an ancestor who supported the cause of American Independence during the years 1774 to 1783.
In order to join, a man must show proof that he is related to an ancestor who was an officer, soldier, seaman, marine, militiaman, or Minuteman. Or, that the ancestor the man is related to was in the armed forces, was a signer of the Declaration of Independence, or who was otherwise recognized as a patriot.
The Sons and Daughters of World War II Veterans accept members who are male and members who are female. This lineage group has three purposes.
One purpose is to allow individuals to prove family ancestry and lineage from an American Veteran of World War II. Another purpose is to perpetuate the story of the sacrifices and achievements of the Americans who fought in that war. The third purpose is to create a database of military records from Individual World War II Veterans that will be accessible to future genealogists, historians, and students.
You can apply to join the Sons and Daughters of World War II Veterans in three ways. If you apply for lineal membership, you have to provide proof of your ancestor’s military service, and proof of your direct lineal relationship to that ancestor. This would include showing proof of appropriate birth, marriage, and death certificates. Or, you can apply for collateral membership or memorial membership instead.
