When decorating, it is often said that it is “all in the details”. When aiming for a sense of sophistication, it is all in the SUBTLE details.
Let’s start with stripes. They work well in any decor theme from casual to contemporary to classic, but when aiming for a sophisticated feel, the best kind of stripes are the ones that are barely there. This can be accomplished by painting the wall your chosen color and then taping off the wall to create your stripes. Instead of adding a second color for the stripe, you can instead add clear glaze, creating a very sublte stripe on the walls. If you do want two color striped walls, make your second color a faint glaze tone.
In choosing fabrics, look for light sheer fabrics for the windows, and shiny satins contrasted with soft chenilles for pillows and throws. Sofa upholstery should also be rich in texture and limited in trendy colors.
Another way to create a sophisticated subtle effect in your home is to use one subtle color in accessorizing. White on white, shades of beige, all crystal or all white accessories, perhaps all accessoires and accents in silver.
In the House and Home article, Subtle Sophistication, by Dayna Del Val, there are a few subltle solutions to make your home more sophisticated. For example, a beadboard ceiling, while not necessary, is an excellent low key detail to add a touch of class to a bungalo. A row of stainless steel canisters are also used to replace mis-matched candle sticks.
When looking around your house while for ways to create add subtle sophistication look for the little things. Add texture to the walls. Make sure your grout is sparkling clean. Add accessories that blends into the decor of your home instead of contrasting and clashing.
