Spatulata.com: Kids Teaching Kids How to Cook

I love getting my kids in the kitchen to cook. (Under my terms of course.) I think it’s important that they learn life skills and frankly, I secretly look forward to the day when I can put them in charge of making dinner! Also, having kids help prepare the meal is one of my ‘sneaky mama’ tips for getting my kids to eat foods that they normally wouldn’t approach. After all, eating the food is the reward reaped for preparing it!

So it was with great interest that I went to go check out a website called Spatulatta.com. If you haven’t been, you have to go. It is chalk full of kid friendly appeal from the fun black and white checkered background to the kid friendly recipes that the girls make.

That’s right I said girls. Spatulata.com features the culinary talents (I’m sure they have a little help from mom) of the Gerasole sisters Isabella and Olivia. There are several things that I like about this site.

First of all it features kids. My daughter saw it and went, “Oh they’re my age.” And they feature real cooking skills. So often cooking for kids involves simply putting milk into a pudding mix or some other mundane task. These girls have a growing list of real cooking skills like how to hard boil an egg, or how to separate one. Since they have real cooking skills they have real recipes. Nothing that’s horribly difficult because it is after all, for kids. But meals and snacks that are beyond your typical measuring and pouring.

But the best part about Spatulata.com is that everything is demonstrated via video. Your computer and internet connection has to be able to support quick time to run the site properly. Every single skill and recipe though, is organized with videos that clearly demonstrate the steps and skills involved in making the recipe in question.

Spatullata.com already has won two awards for their excellent website but I highly suspect that this is just the first that we’ll see of the Gerasole sisters.

Have you seen the Families.com cookbook? It’s awesome!
