Speak Up!

I hardly ever comment or “like” a status that my 15-year-old daughter posts. I try to not make it obvious that I am looking at (okay, stalking) her Facebook page.

But she recently posted something that I couldn’t resist giving a thumbs up to. It was basically a reprimand to “whoever” was judging her because of something that took place in the past. One of her lines was, “It’s over and done. If I’m over it, you should be too.”

Yep, that’s my girl…like mother like daughter. She tells it like it is. I, however, have just learned to be a little more refined and discreet. Age will do the same for her.

Another part of her post says something along the lines of you may have heard things about her but if you don’t know her personally, you don’t really have the right to hate her. I liked one of the comments from a friend, “Preach it girl!”

There are times I wish she would reign in her forthrightness. But then other times, like this, I applaud her for it.

I’m so glad she doesn’t allow the opinions of others to bring her down. But she certainly does address them.

Personally, I wish more teens would stick up for themselves. Too many choose to go in the corner and hide. They allow others to walk all over them.

Now I’m not saying you should be mean, vindictive or retaliatory. But I guarantee you that people are more likely to stop bothering you if you stick up for yourself.

Unlike my daughter, my boys tend to do the opposite. They let others step on their toes and wait for it to go away. And I am constantly telling them to stick up for themselves.

You can defeat bullies and other naysayers by just having a voice. You don’t need fists or acts of violence to do it. All you need is to speak up!
