Starting and expanding a collection can be really cool. This may be something you can do as a family if each of you shares a common interest or if you can agree on a theme. However, collections tend to be very personal and viewing an individual’s collection can tell you a lot about that person.
You may also need to agree on size and space limits when pursuing collectibles, because they can take over if you’re not careful. Still, wall shelves around the perimeter of the room near the ceiling or other types of shelves devoted to holding collected items can be quite effective in keeping a collection from appearing to be nothing more than clutter.
It is a lot of fun to spend a day together going out to shop flea markets, swap meets, yard sales, antique stores, and gift shops to find the perfect pieces to add to your collections. You can also surprise each other with special items, and you can have fun rearranging collections as new items are added to it. A collection can also be a great inspiration when it comes to decorating your room or your home.
The trick is to pick something meaningful instead of simply choosing a theme on a whim just to have something to collect. Some collectibles may become valuable in the future or become heirlooms that can be handed down to future generations. Collected items also tend to become great conversation pieces and give guests a better sense of what your family or a particular person is like.
One of my daughter’s collects Teddy Bears. She has all different kinds. To me, they express a gentleness, and it is this tenderness that defines my daughter’s personality. She is very kind and sensitive to others. She is sweet and affectionate.
