Every week, the Special Needs Blog Week in Review brings you a brief summary of each of the blogs that have appeared here in the past seven days. This is a quick and easy way to find out about the blogs that you might have missed when they were first posted.
The Special Needs Podcast Roundup went up on July 9, 2012. This week, I’d like to point out an episode of The Coffee Klatch. The episode is called “DSM, Examining a Flawed System That Traps Our Children”. If I understand correctly, this is an episode of the “Bright Not Broken” podcast that is being released through The Coffee Klatch. It features Dr. William Sheehan and Dr. Stephen Thurber, two Minnesota doctors that work with children who have developmental disorders.
Illinois Mom Abandoned Special Needs Daughter In Tennessee
This has to be the saddest story that I’ve heard in a long, long, time. A mom from Illinois has a daughter who has severe mental impairments. The daughter is nineteen years old. The mom chose to drive her daughter across state lines, to Tennessee, specifically for the purpose of abandoning her there. Technically, the mother has not committed a crime.
Checking For Signs
There are several different types of special needs that run in my family. I don’t have children of my own, but even so, I find myself checking my niece and nephews to see if they are exhibiting signs and symptoms of those special needs. So far, only one child has one special need: allergies. I find myself wondering if it is “normal” to worry that the children of my siblings could be affected by the special needs that run in the family.
Nuance Helps Your Child to “Speak Dragon”
Nuance is a company that makes an assistive technology called “Dragon Speech Recognition Software”. It uses voice recognition to put what a person speaks directly into text in the computer. This can help students who have dyslexia to have an easier time completing homework assignments that involve a lot of writing. The software can also be used by people who have physical disabilities that make it hard for them to type into a keyboard or to use a mouse.
50 Cent Made Controversial Tweets About Autism
Rapper 50 Cent has a Twitter account. Recently, he used it to make some really unkind comments about a fan whom he perceived to have autism. He followed that with a rude comment about how he did not want anyone with special needs to follow him on Twitter. This has not gone unnoticed. His mean comments resulted in a cancellation of an event at a venue in Ireland.
