This week, I bring you information about ADHD and diet, insight into respecting autism, tips to help with problem behaviors, schools that are making kids sick, and advice for eating gluten-free.
NPR released an episode of “Morning Edition” on January 9, 2012. This episode is called “For Kids With ADHD, Some Foods May Complement Treatment”. The episode points out that while some foods seem to be helpful, it is better to cut back on certain other foods. It also emphasizes that you cannot cure ADHD with diet alone.
The Coffee Klatch has an episode that was released on January 8, 2012. This episode is called “Respecting Autism”. In this episode, Dr. Stanley Greenspan, creator of the “Floortime” method of teaching, joins Dr. Tippy. They point out that people with Autism Spectrum Disorders have difficulty with relating and with communication. They don’t have memory problems, and autism is not just a series of extinguishable behaviors.
CNN has a video by Dr. Sanjay Gupta that was released on January 13, 2012. It is called “Sickness shuts school; parents outraged”. A school in Bronx, New York, had potentially dangerous levels of a cancer causing chemical. Administrators intentionally kept this information secret for months.

Dr. Gupta investigates some schools that are making kids sick, and he talks with some parents of kids who have gotten sick from the school building, and the air quality in it.
Hold the Gluten! has a new episode that was released on January 12, 2012. This episode is called “Happy Gluten-Free 2012!” and is episode number 44. In this episode, Vanessa shares information about her trip to Breezes Bahamas (which had lots of gluten-free food). Maureen shares her Philly gluten-free dining experience. They talk about colleges that cater to gluten-free students, and give a recipe for beer battered onion rings that are gluten-free.
PBS NewsHour has an episode that was released on January 13, 2012. This episode is called “Kids and Cancer: Why Pediatric Cancer Cure Rates Have Improved So Much”. Health correspondent Betty Ann Bowser talks about the positive developments in pediatric cancer research in the past 40 years.
ReThink Autism has a “Tip of the Week” that was released on January 4, 2012. It is called “Problem Behavior Part 1”. It suggests parents need to find out the “function” of the behavior first. They released Part Two on January 11, 2012.
