There are two main types of special needs podcasts out there. Some of them focus each and every episode on a topic that is relevant to parents of children who have special needs. Others occasionally touch on this subject, or just do one episode, one time. This week’s Special Needs Podcast Roundup has a whole lot of stuff for you to listen to.
Science Update released an episode on June 28, 2011 called “Deaf Vision”. Host Bob Hirshon talks with University of Sheffield neuroscientist Charlotte Codina about a finding that she and her colleagues made. They learned that people who have been deaf since birth have neurons for transmitting visual information allocated differently than people who were not deaf since birth.
Coffee Klatch has an episode that was released on July 24, 2011. It features an interview with Derek Hoare, who is a single parent with two children, (one of whom has autism). Listen to his story about how Child Protective Services took his nine year old after the child had a wandering incident.
The Anaphylactic Allergy podcast released a video episiode on July 19, 2011. They visit a Food Allergy Walk. They talk to people from FAAN who created the walk for Food Allergy Awareness, and to children who describe what life with food allergies is like.
Key Ministry has an episode that was released on July 14, 2011. It is called : “A Church for Every Child”, and it talks about how churches can support families of children who have special needs.
Special Kid School Talk has an episode that was released on July 17, 2011. It is called “A Father Fights the School System For Justice For His Son!” Listen to one father’s experience battling with his child’s school system in order to get his son the appropriate accommodations.
Special Kid School Talk also released an episode on July 22, 2011. This one is called: “Physically Disabled Mom Raising a Learning Disabled Son”. Host Dr. Kari interviews Glenda Standeven, a 24 year old bone cancer survivor. Glenda has a son who has written output disability.
Special Kid School Talk then released an episode on July 24, 2011 called: “Gifted Kids Have Special Needs Too!”. Dr. Kari interviews Dr. Barbara Klein, a Los Angeles clinical psychologist. They discuss the special needs of intellectually gifted children.
Parenting Podcast has an episode that was released on July 25, 2011. It features guest Michael Sandler, who is the author of the book “College Confidence with ADD”. This episode focuses on the topic “Conquering College with ADD”.
