Special Needs Podcast Roundup – Week of July 6, 2011

microphone There are plenty of podcasts out there that talk about parenting. Not all of them are specifically focused on special needs, but you can find episodes where a particular special need is talked about. It is also good to look for video podcasts as well as audio podcasts that discuss special needs. These resources may not be very easy to find, but I have located some great ones this week.

Here is the Special Needs Podcast Roundup for the week of July 6, 2011. Not all of the podcasts featured were necessarily released this week. Some were made earlier this year, but are still worth a listen.

The creator of the “For Better or For Worse” comic, Lynn Johnson, has a series of video podcast episodes where she talks about certain aspects of the comic. In two of these episodes, she talks about the character named Shannon, (who was based on an actual person in her life who has special needs). One episode is called “Who is Shannon”, and another is called “Who is Shannon (Part Two)

The New York Academy of Sciences has a podcast. They teamed up with Autism Speaks for an episode that was released on May 27, 2011. The episode is called “On the Cutting Edge of Autism Research”. Two people who are autism researchers give you a behind-the-scenes look at new technologies and treatments that could, potentially, redefine our understanding of autism.

Autismpodcast is hosted by Michael Boll, a father of a ten year old son who is on the autism spectrum. Episode 98 of this podcast was released on April 27, 2011. It is called “Wretches and Jabberers” and has an interview with Geradine Wurzberg, the creator of the film called “Wretches and Jabberers”. The film follows two adult men who are on the autism spectrum, as they travel around the world on a quest to change people’s attitudes about autism.

ABC Mid North Coast NSW, in Australia, recently did a podcast episode focusing on ADHD. The episode was released July 7, 2011. Keep in mind that Australia is a day ahead of the United States. This episode is called: “ADHD kids- A chip off the old block?”. You can listen to an interview with Mark Gibbeson, who is a Behavioral Pediatrician. He says that ADHD is the most common neurobiological disorder found in children, and discussed the symptoms and impact of ADHD.

Conscious Parenting, which is done through Blog Talk Radio, released an episode on July 29, 2011. It is called “Conscious Parenting – Labeling Children”. This episode has an interview with Michelle Brown-Stafford, who discusses the pros and cons about “labeling children” with the host of the podcast.
