The Special Needs Podcast Roundup went up on July 16, 2012. This week, I’d like to point out an episode by “Need Project” that is called “HorsePower Therapeutic Riding Center with Mark Renn”. The episode talks about a group called Colorado HorsePower. It is a non-profit organization that provides equine therapy and teaches horsemanship to individuals with special needs.
Harsh Physical Punishment Increases the Risk of Mental Illness
A study shows that children who receive harsh physical punishment are at an increased risk of developing a mental illness. This does not necessarily mean that all children or adults who have a mental illness experienced harsh physical punishment as a child. Instead, the study points out one way that parents can help prevent their child from having a mental illness. Use a “time out” instead of physical punishment.
Parents of Kids With Autism Want Less Judgement
A study asked parents of children who have an autism spectrum disorder what their biggest daily challenge was. The parents said it was the judgment they received from other parents when their child was having behavioral difficulties. This speaks volumes!
Principal Suspended for Comments About Special Education Students
A principal of a public high school in Pennsylvania sent text messages, emails, and wrote in student’s personal files some really inappropriate comments about the students. He referred to students who were in Special Education is “the guilty people”. This eventually got him suspended from his job, but, he will be returning in the upcoming school year.
Parking Permit Problem Reduces Access to Home Care
The Philadelphia Parking Authority won’t make an exception to the parking permit law for home care nurses. A family has an infant with SMA, who requires twenty-four hour care. The nurses keep getting parking tickets because the family lives on a street with restricted parking. The PPA has offered to drop the limitations between when a person can apply for a 30 day parking permit, but won’t help in meaningful ways.
Parent Sues Autism Speaks for Disability Discrimination
A mother of a teenage son who has an autism spectrum disorder was hired to work as a walk events manager for Autism Speaks. Autism Speaks rescinded the job offer, days before she was to start. It was specifically because it didn’t want to make the accommodations the mother requested so she could care for her son on days his school let out early. The mom has filed a lawsuit.
