You would think that food for the grill would be on sale at this time of year, wouldn’t you? After all, it is summer, and putting some of those BBQ items on sale just might bring people into your store. Unfortunately, though, this isn’t really the case.
This time of year is probably the worse time to buy those meats that go on the grill. Demand is up, but yet the supply isn’t up, so prices are higher. Also, some staples that tend to go with the BBQ as well, such as corn, or tomatoes, really is almost but not quite in season. In order to get these items in the store, they have to be imported or grown in hot houses, making the costs higher.
Don’t worry, though, if you are smart, you can still spend less money on your BBQ meals.
First, take a look at your freezer. You might have out aside some chicken or hamburger when it was on sale earlier. Now is the time to defrost it and put it to good use.
Next, take a look at what is available at the store. You don’t have to sacrifice on quality to save money. Choose and equally good piece of meat, but just choose it in a cut that isn’t as expensive. You can also buy your meat in a bulk or uncut form and then cut it yourself. Or simply ask the butcher in your store to do it for you. Most will do this without charging you anything.
As for the other items on your list, choose items that are on sale and easily available. Instead of serving potato salad, for example, serve a cucumber salad. Or if you have to have the favorites, cut down on the portions and serve them alongside other less expensive dishes.
