Spending Christmas in the Family Room

christmas tree I am overflowing today with gratitude that we were able to spend our Christmas together as a family. While extended family is nice (and we will be seeing them for the rest of the weekend), it was amazing to just spend the day home alone with my husband and children.

We attended our local church on Christmas eve and then rushed home to snuggle in for the night. The next morning, the kids were up bright and early and the adults teased that we just might spend the whole day in bed, leaving the present opening until tomorrow. Of course the kids would have none of that.

Our Christmas tree is set up in our family room, which thanks to new insulation and a war on drafts, is now the warmest room in the house. We spent most of the day in this room together, with the exception of popping out to the dining room to eat, and setting up a miniature golf set in the living room turned playroom.

We also cooked a big meal in the kitchen, so there was some time spent there, but for the majority of the day, we watched television, played with toys and games, admired the Christmas tree, and just talked in the family room.

One of the big presents this year was a family game that we could all play together, even the youngest one with a little help. Soon we were laughing hysterically. My husband asked, “when was the last time we had this much fun?”

It reminded me that not only have we been so focused on house projects that we haven’t appreciated our home, but we need to have more days like this together in our home. Yesterday, the family room really was a family room for us, and for the first time I felt as if we really “got our money’s worth” out of it. I can’t wait to see how we will be able to more appreciate the other rooms in our home.
