Spending the Holidays in New York City

I love spending the holidays in New York City. The problem is, so do millions of other people. If you don’t mind dealing with huge crowds, then soaking up the sights and sounds of the season in one of the world’s most magical cities, should be on your to-do list this month.

At the top of your must-see list should be Rockefeller Center. Its world-famous tree and ice skating rink serve as amazing backdrops to family photos. In addition, Radio City Music Hall, the view from Top of the Rock, and the observation deck at 30 Rockefeller Plaza are equally attractive venues this time of year.

The nice thing about Rockefeller Center is that it is centrally located. From the Plaza you are only steps away from world-class art and architecture, incredible food, and phenomenal shopping. However, you don’t have to drain your wallet to have fun in NYC right now. Consider window browsing.

At Anthropologie, located at 50 Rockefeller Plaza, you can view a vision of winter white. The store’s windows are filled with enormous snowballs and whimsical seasonal decorations. If you need to finish some Christmas shopping, then head inside where you can find cozy sweaters, scarves and other casual but trendy clothes.

Other stores that will delight you with their amazing holiday window displays can be found on Fifth Avenue. Remember, you don’t have to spend a single dime to view the spectacular decorations that fill these fancy stores’ windows. Check out Harry Winston’s window this year. It features rows of diamonds hanging like sparkling icicles. On the same block, Henri Bendel has an upscale display featuring elegant Christmas decorations as well as high-end accessories.

If you are traveling with kids (or with people who act like children), you must visit FAO Schwartz. The legendary toy store is stuffed with out-of-this world playthings, such as a $399 pink puppy the size of a loveseat. If you don’t have 400 bucks to drop on a huge stuffed animal, then consider paying $3.25 for a quarter-pound of edible treats, such as gummy bears and chocolate.
