My wife and I have been trying to use some sign language with our son to increase our communication before he becomes reasonably vocal. He learned the sign for “milk” very very early and he’s been progressing ever since. At each milestone we’ve introduced more words: “More,” “Bath,” and most recently “Cracker.” Today we wondered how to sign “Crackers” in the plural because me son certainly found a way to get a lot of them at once.
My wife lovingly found little crackers from an organic company and has been kept sane by ensuring her son is getting the very best of what we can offer him. When she made the decision earlier to only blend up organic fruits and veggies at home the crackers seemed like a natural step. Ever since that first satisfying crunch on his little teeth from the “solid” cracker our son has enjoyed them as a little treat. Each time my wife sign’s “Cracker” he gets really excited and looks for the box. Today he did something different.
Today my son found the box of crackers and happily tried to open it himself. Since he hasn’t quite figured out boxes and their contents yet the result was a disaster. Crackers were all over the floor. He dumped them in his lap. As he sat on the floor staring at the sea of crackers inside his little legs he hardly knew what to do. Mom and Dad rushed to pick them up and put them back into the box. For a while it seemed that our son was trying to help us put them back, but once enough of them were out of the way he realized what they were. Once he saw the familiar shape of the cracker he started to pick them up and eat them. I’m not sure if there is a lesson to be learned here or not. For now I’m going with: Don’t open boxes upside down.
