Spiritual Check Up

Every year we should go in and have an annual check up. The doctor checks us over to make sure everything is still working. Similarly we go to the dentist on a regular basis for a check up to make sure that we are not developing any cavities and to prevent tooth decay and other common problems. But when was the last time that you had a spiritual check up. Our testimonies do need to be nourished each and every day. It is important to take care of our spiritual help, just as it is important to take care of our physical health. Here are four questions that you should ask yourself when you do your spiritual check up.

Are you reading the scriptures and praying on a regular basis? If not you are failing to give your testimony the nourishment that it needs to continue to grow, it may slip away from you. Additionally you should ask yourself if you are getting something out of the time you spend studying the gospel. Just reading on the surface will not give you the same growth as reading and pondering the words. Taking notes on your scripture study can help to make it more meaningful. Additionally by working to start this habit, you will be strengthened to withstand trials.

Are you attending church on a regular basis? Do you look forward to your lessons or do you dread going? Your attitude and church attendance says a lot about where you are spiritually. If you look forward to church each week it means that you want to have the spirit with you. It also means that you are putting the gospel at the front of your life. If you want to begin attending more regularly do it. It may take a little extra effort but you will notice a difference in your life. If you have a bad attitude when you are at church, pray that you will be able to change the attitude so you can feel the spirit at church.

Do you recognize the Lord’s hand in your life on a regular basis? When you are able to see the blessings, even during the trials, you are aware of the relationship and reliance you have on Heavenly Father. If you are having a difficult time doing this, then you should take the time to write down three blessings each day. They should be new and different blessings each day.

How are your emotions? If you lose your temper more quickly or seem to have a lot of resentment, then you may need to work on having the spirit with you more often. As you focus on the Lord and helping others your own misery should pass away. (Of course if you have a chemical imbalance or struggle with depression, you may need to seek additional medical help.)
