As parents we are always striving to care for children. Often times this will focus on caring for them physically. We make sure that they have food to eat and get adequate rest. We take them to the doctor and teach them how to take care of themselves. But are we focused on caring for our children’s spiritual needs on a regular basis? It is important to take time each day to help your children spiritually.
The easiest and most basic way to do this is to have family prayer and scripture study. Family home evening also gives you the opportunity to connect with your child spiritually. These daily and weekly activities give you a specific way to teach the gospel to your children. We are instructed to do them, because they really do make a difference.
Another important way to nourish your children spiritually is to take time to really listen and talk to your children on a regular basis. By having easy and meaningful conversations on a regular basis you are making it easier for your children to talk about the tougher stuff when the time comes. It is important to start this habit at a young age, because teenagers are likely to be resistant if you start trying to talk to them then.
Another important way to help nourish your children spiritually is to encourage church attendance. This includes Sunday meetings as well as weekly activities and seminary. These activities allow your children to be taught and nourished by other people. Sometimes your child needs to hear certain principles in a new way or from a different person.
Finally you need to set the example for your children by living the gospel fully and completely. If you do this, the moments will come naturally, Your children will know about your testimony because they see you living it on a daily basis. This will give them strength when they are questioning and working on ganging a testimony of their own.
