Splash into Summer with a Pool Party

With the Fourth of July holiday less than two weeks away, many families across the nation are planning to celebrate our country’s independence with backyard barbeques and pool parties. After all, nothing says “Happy Birthday America” like sparklers and cannon balls.

Of course, you don’t have to own a pool in order to splash into summer entertaining. If you don’t have a backyard swimming pool you could rent a large freestanding pool or take the party to a public pool. If you are planning to have a large soiree at your home pool, it’s not a bad idea to hire a lifeguard for the party. This is an especially good idea if you are inviting a ton of young children to the party.

Private lifeguards are not hard to find. Most YMCAs, as well as community pools, often have lifeguards for hire. In addition, you can search the Internet for lifeguard services. Happy Swimmers USA provides links to a host of local resources that will set you up with a lifeguard to keep your guests safe.

Once you have a safety plan in place, then you can decide on a theme for your pool party. If you are planning to host the splashtastic shindig on the 4th of July, then you can just let the holiday dictate your theme. Plan a star-spangled, all-American party complete with red, white and blue inflatables decorating the pool. You can also fill the pool deck with stars and stripes decorations, and stick with a menu of hot dogs, hamburgers, lemonade, corn on the cob, potato salad, apple pie and vanilla ice cream. Don’t forget to play patriotic music in the background and hand out sparklers as party favors.

Another idea is to go with a luau theme. After all, Hawaii is the 50th state. Serve tropical libations to the adults and have Hawaiian Punch on hand for the kids. The pool area can be decked out in tiki torches, fake palm trees and grass skirt accents can decorate the tables. Hand out leis as guests arrive and serve up a menu inspired by a traditional Hawaiian luau complete with roast pork, fresh fruit, and macadamia nuts.
