Spring Break Destinations

Since much of the country is either digging out or hunkering down for what the Weather Channel is calling “Valentine’s Day Storm 2007,” I thought it would be appopriate to turn the travel spotlight on destinations that typically experience much milder weather conditions this time of year. Over the next few days I will highlight popular sunny spots you may want to consider putting on your list of “Spring Break Destinations.” After all, despite what it may look like outside, spring is just around the corner.

KEY LARGO, FLORIDA

Key Largo, Florida is the northernmost island of the Florida Keys island chain. It is located about an hour’s drive from South Florida’s two major airports.

Key Largo is considered the “Dive Capital of the World” and lives up to its name. The water around Key Largo constantly changes from blue to green, turquoise to cobalt, and various shades in between. Naturally, the area is prime for diving. What’s more, Key Largo is home to the only living coral reef off the coastal United States, and its beauty is unmatched. But, the vibrant colors of the fish and coral in crystal clear water is just one of the reasons snow birds flock to Key Largo.

But, snowbirds aren’t the only ones making the flight. The area is a haven for migratory birds and those who love to watch them. Staying in Key Largo puts you within driving distance of Everglades National Park—the only ecosystem of its kind in the world. It encompasses more than 1 million acres and is a must-see attraction for birdwatchers and nature lovers. The park is home to 300 species of birds such as the roseate spoonbill, wood stork, great blue heron and a variety of egrets. It is also houses alligators, deer and bobcats.

The natural wonders offset a number of other thrilling adventures including parasailing and jet skiing. But, at its core Key largo offers visitors simple pleasures: gorgeous beaches, incredible sunsets and friendly locals who go out of their way to make sure you enjoy all the region has to offer.
