Spring Break Survival – Part One

This week is our spring break. The kids have been out of school since Friday afternoon. I’m enjoying the chance to sleep in. But the kids are already showing signs of restlessness. I’ve got a few ideas for keeping them busy this week so I thought I’d offer those ideas here for other parents in a Spring Break Survival Series.

Lots of libraries offer special activities for spring break week. Our library has great stuff for every day of this week – children’s movies, storytellers, magic shows, and plays. Today we are going to a silly play based on Greek mythology. While we are there we’ll look at some craft books for good ideas, and we’ll find some new books to read this week.

At the mall yesterday we saw an indoor putt-putt course that glows in the dark! We didn’t have time to play yesterday but we’ll try to go back this week. Or if the weather is nice, it would be fun to play outside. Some of our outdoor golf places are crazy expensive, others are only a dollar or two. In our town I can see a direct correlation between the tourist oriented courses and the price of admission.

My children love to go out to eat. Our budget doesn’t allow it often. Eating out with five makes for a scary bill. The kids are begging to go to IHOP this week for the Horton Hears a Who pancake special. It does look pretty cute. I think we’ll try it tomorrow. We definitely don’t go out for breakfast very often, so it feels like a really special treat when we do.
If I can get the house picked up a little, it’s always nice to have some friends over. I’m always amazed at how having a couple of extra kids around is less trouble than just my own. I can park a lounge chair in the yard, grab a magazine and watch them all play happily.

Check back tomorrow for more spring break survival ideas.
