Spring Break Survival Tips

Did you watch the news tonight?

All three major networks led their shows with the scary news that we’ll likely be paying $5 per gallon for gas by the time Memorial Day weekend rolls around.

If you are planning to take a road trip this year, now is the time to do it.

Spring break is an ideal time to load up the family and hit the road to explore our great nation; however, if you don’t plan properly the adventure could turn into vacation purgatory.

To help you survive what could be a very, very long trip, consider stocking up on the following:

Music: Good music is a quintessential part of any road trip, though these days hosting backseat sing-alongs has fallen by the wayside thanks to portable DVDs, handheld video games and other portable electronic devices. Instead of taking turns singing “99 Bottles of Beer on the Wall” to pass the time with a van full of tempestuous kids, create your soundtrack featuring your family’s favorite tunes. Simply load the music on a MP3 player or burn a bunch of CDs. Playing DJ will make cruising down the highway an enjoyable experience. Another option is to pack some audiobooks. You can choose from kids’ books to current New York Times’ best-sellers.

Games: When video games have lost their luster, turn to classic road trip versions. I Spy, 20 Questions and License Plate Bingo are excellent boredom busters for even the youngest members of the family. Other options include car versions of Simon Says and Scavenger Hunt. If you want to really go retro, then play the storytelling game. Start by having someone in the car make up a sentence or two with a cliffhanger ending, such as: “Once upon a time there lived a tiny mouse who loved cheese, but every time he sunk his teeth into a piece he…” The next person finishes that sentence and adds a couple more lines before adding his own cliffhanger. Depending on how creative or silly your passengers are, you could keep the story going for miles.
