Encouraging our kids to get more exercise is a parent’s duty. We need to kick them out of the house and off the video game players and out into the yard, to the park or to the playground where they can run. Where they can be kids, playing with other kids and being active. I can’t stress this enough because it’s important and with childhood obesity on the rise and the fact that the choices our kids make right now will affect their lifestyle choices for the rest of their lives.
But you know that. I know you know that. You don’t need another lecture on what your kids should be doing or what you should be doing as a parent. So rather than beat on this dead horse, I’d rather give you some tips for your kids to support them in their running. My daughter prefers her roller skates and her bicycle, but if running is what your kids like to do, then the following should prove helpful to you.
How to Support Your Child’s Running
When it comes to running, whether it’s outside for a run around the block or to go running and playing at the playground, be sure that your kids:
- Wear loose cotton clothing, preferably something that helps keep them cool
- Light colors are better than darker ones for reflecting the sun
- Wear sturdy, supportive running shoes that protect and support your feet
- Limit that outdoor time when it’s truly hot outside, kids are more sensitive to hot/cold temperature changes
- Kids need to hydrate regularly, make sure they take water breaks at least every 20 to 30 minutes
- Water is better than sports drinks, soda or caffeinated beverages
- Sunscreen is a must, especially for light-skinned children so they won’t burn
- Go with them, because they need a buddy to go with them whether it’s riding a bike or running alongside
Encouraging our kids to exercise requires more than just lip service. When you kick them out of the house to do exercise – go with them. Not only will both of you enjoy the health benefits, your relationship will benefit as well.
