Most of the nation has been experiencing an early spring–or non-existent winter–so why not extend the seasonal surprise to your scrapbooking?
Now is a great time to get a jumpstart on spring-themed layouts. In a desperate attempt to use up leftover ribbon from the holidays, I’ve been making ribbon flowers. They don’t take much time, effort or money to create, and they go a long way to add a pop of color to your layouts. What’s more, you can place them practically anywhere on a page design.
Depending on the size of your ribbon bloom you could use it to replace the letter “O” in a page title or as the dot on the letter “i”. If you have multiple flowers that are about the same size, you could combine them to create a bouquet and adhere it to the page with a stamped leaf design.
Ribbon flowers are also a bright and cheery accent to photo frames and journaling blocks. If you are designing a garden-themed layout, consider making a page border with blossoms crafted from decorative ribbon (striped, dotted, multi-colored, etc.) or fancy ribbon with cool textures and finishes.
The latter option can be found at scrapbook supply stores or other specialty craft shops. If you are looking to save money on ribbon, buy in bulk. Making Memories and American Crafts sell rolls of ribbon in packages of coordinating colors, which are perfect for making ribbon flowers to feature on spring-themed layouts. If you prefer to shop locally, then look for retailers that sell ribbon by the yard in order to save a few bucks.
When you tire of constructing flowers from your ribbon stash, use the rest to make bows to attach to photo mats or journaling tags. Another way to get rid of excess ribbon is to fold strips diagonally to form photo corners for your page designs.
