Spring or Summer?

Mother Nature is having hot flashes in March and I am loving every minute of it.

From a mother of an outdoorsy second grader to the Mother of all things outdoors, thank you.

I don’t know where you live, but here in the Midwest we are experiencing a historic heat wave the likes of which has never been previously recorded. We’re sizzling under 82-degree temps in the middle of March.

Now, this is the kind of March madness I can really cheer for.

March weather madness has been in the air for nearly two weeks.

Yes, for two glorious weeks we’ve had record highs in the 70s and 80s.

We barely crack 80 degrees in June, let alone March.

All this wacky weather has sent kids stripping down to shorts and in some cases swimsuits. While I refused to pull out the slip and slide, I did drag out the water table so that my daughter could have some fun in the sun.

Cabin fever be gone. I’m now searching for ways my kid can cool off as we prepare for another few days of these sensational 70s.

I know that we are not alone in celebrating this wondrous summer-like weather. According to the folks at the Weather Channel, this heat is spreading throughout the country. So, if you too are looking for ways to cool off with your kids minus the public pools and lifeguard-less beaches, consider the following:

Musical Water Balloons: Gather a bunch of kids and have them sit in a circle roughly four feet apart from one another. Turn on some tunes and have the children toss a water balloon from player to player as the song plays. Stop the music at random moments. Each time the music stops, the person who is left holding the balloon is “out.” Anyone who gets wet by breaking a balloon is “out,” too. The last person in the circle is the winner.

Shave a Water Balloon: This game is geared more for older kids who can handle a disposable razor. Fill up the balloons with water, and then draw faces on them. Next, cover the top and bottom of the balloon with shaving cream and have the players use their razors to remove the cream without popping the balloon. The person who gets the closest shave in the shortest amount of time without popping his balloon wins.
