Today my kindergartner blasted out of her classroom and raced down the school hallway with what looked like a rainbow colored contrail floating behind her. As she jumped into my arms I realized that the blaze of color was in fact a handful of paper streamers.
“Nice tail,” I quipped.
“It’s not a tail,” my daughter responded repositioning the streamers so I could see them better. “It’s a St. Patrick’s Day rainbow and I’m the pot of gold at the end of it.”
Of course! What was I thinking? A paper plate with a bunch of streamers attached to it by globs of Elmer’s glue is absolutely a St. Patrick’s Day rainbow, and now you too can get into the Irish spirit by making your own handheld rainbow.
Here’s how:
ST. PATRICK’S DAY RAINBOW
Materials:
Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple crepe
Paper streamers
Large paper plate
Scissors
Glue or stapler
Directions:
Cut out a circle from the center of the paper plate. The circle should be big enough for your child’s hand to fit through.
Cut long pieces of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple crepe paper streamers. Each streamer should be about two to three feet long.
Glue or staple the streamers onto the paper plate.
If the rainbow craft isn’t green enough for your St. Patrick’s Day celebrations, then invite the kids into the kitchen to help whip up some holiday-inspired dishes, such as:
Green scrambled eggs and ham
Broccoli stir-fry
Green apples and green-tinted caramel sauce
Leprechaun pudding
To make pudding get some instant pistachio pudding, some small jars with lids, spoons, and milk. Next, place one tablespoon of leprechaun “dust” (pudding mix) into a jar, add 1/4 cup cold milk, place lid on tightly and have the kids shake the jar until the pudding gets thick enough to eat.
