St. Patrick’s Day Math and Science Lessons

Green Goop

You will need 2 cups of water, green food coloring and 6 cups of cornstarch. Mix a few drops of green food coloring with the cornstarch and enjoy!

Find the Rainbow

This activity is always popular with small children. You can use a stuffed animal or other object for another time of year. For St. Patrick’s Day, I decided to make it a bit more interesting. I cut out a rainbow and then cut out each individual color arc. Hide the color arcs around the room. Then allow the child to find each arc and put the rainbow back together by gluing on a piece of paper. You can hide several different rainbows or just one depending on your child’s interest of the number of children playing. Another variation would be to hide gold coins around the room and tell you child to find all ten coins or whatever number you chose.

Color Mixing

Provide green and white washable paint. You will also need paint brushes and/or zip lock bags. Have the child mix the green and white paint on paper or in the zip lock bags in varying amounts to create different shades of green.

Shamrock Sequencing

Cut out several four leaf clovers out in varying sizes. Have your child arrange the clovers in order from smallest to largest and largest to smallest.

Green Cream

Add green food coloring to shaving cream for make green cream. This may stain so be careful. Have the child mix the shaving cream in a zip lock bag or play with it in a 9 by 13 pan.

Shamrock Number Hop

Cut out several shamrocks number the amount of shamrocks you desire. Number the shamrocks from one to the number desired. Then have your child hop from number one to the end saying each number. You can also call out a number and have your child hop to the number. Use it for adding as well!
