Are you and your preschooler looking for the end of the rainbow? I can’t help you there, but if you’re looking to win gold in your preschooler’s eyes, making rainbow stained glass cookies is sure to help your cause.
Stained glass cookies are a favourite at Christmas time. In fact, some stores sell cookie cutters that are nested in different sizes specifically so that you can create a big cookie with a little hole in the middle that is shaped like a snowflake, a bell, or a Christmas tree.
Stained glass cookies don’t need to be difficult to make, and they don’t need to be for Christmas time either. For St Patrick’s Day, make a see through rainbow with your preschooler!
How do you make rainbow cookies? They are very therapeutic. First, get a big bag of lifesavers or other colored, clear candies. Divide them by color. Place them inside a plastic bag and with a towel over the bag, pound them with a small hammer until they are in small pieces. This is a perfect job for your preschooler.
Make a batch of your favorite white sugar cookie dough. To make a rainbow, flatten the dough with a rolling pin. Then use a butter knife to cut the dough into thin strips, similar to really fat linguine.
On a cookie sheet, place the strips beside each other with a small space in between, then move each end slightly downwards to make an arc. Seal each end with another piece of sugar cookie dough. Place the crushed candies inside the holes in the dough.
Put the whole thing into the oven and bake it at 350 degrees for about 6 minutes, longer if you have a thicker rainbow. Enjoy your lucky rainbows! They may not make you rich, but perhaps if you leave some out for the leprechauns they will give you directions to the real thing!
