Stanford’s Sustainable Fashion Show

The other day, I blogged about a few sustainable fashion designers – individuals who are trying to make a difference with their eco-friendly collections. But where can designers show off their sustainable collections? At a sustainable fashion show, of course.

This past April 22 (Earth Day), Stanford University held its first sustainable fashion show. The object was to raise the awareness of eco-friendly fashion not only for the students of the campus, but also people in the surrounding area. The fashion created for the show was made with sustainable fabrics, recycled items, and reused fabric remnants. But, the fashion show didn’t just stop at fashion. It also promoted health, sustainable food practices, and environmental policies as well.

Among the professional designers that were featured at the fashion show were Aoki Jeans, AuH2O, Doie, Mountains of the Moon, Judah Ross, Rebe, She-Bible, and Sweet Skins.

The show also featured student designers. Annika Matta (Class of 2011) is a Product Design major who hopes to be a sustainable designer after graduation. Irys Kornbluth, also a Product Design student with the Class of 2011, said she hoped the fashion show would make students stop and think how clothing choices could affect the environment. Irys is currently an intern at B. MINIMA, a company which uses recycled bottles and plastic bags to make material. Irys is also the founder of Sustainable Fashion Collective at Stanford. Suzie Bartram (Class of 2011) is another Product Design student who believes that sustainability and environmental concerns are major issues which can be addressed, in part, by sustainable fashion. Suzie loves to design skirts from recycled items she finds in the dorm. Laura Chau (Class of 2011) is a Management Science & Engineering student who taught herself to sew when she was young then became interested in sustainable fashion in high school.

No word on whether Stanford is set for a second annual sustainable fashion show next year, but hopefully there will be enough interest to make it happen.
