Staph Infection Turns Deadly

Earlier I reported that several students in Massachusetts had been infected with a drug resistant staph infection. The schools were sanitizing and washing with bleach and water.

It seems that the infection ahs also been detected in schools nation wide. The staph, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is not affected by penicillin and other antibiotics. The good news is that it can be treated with other types of drugs.

Eighth grade students at a middle school in Southern Indiana have been diagnosed with the staph infection. The students were football players and the school has taken action to sanitize the locker rooms.

Norwell High School in Ossian also has confirmed cases of the staph. These students have been treated and are said to be doing okay.

Unfortunately, one student who contracted the disease in Bedford, Virginia could not fight the infection. The student died after being in the hospital for over a week.

One student in East Indiana also has developed the skin condition. It is uncertain as of now if the staph is MRSA or another strain.

Teachers all over the nation should be concerned about keeping their classrooms as healthy as possible. Clorox and Lysol wipes are wonderful for wiping down tables and chairs and desks. A disinfecting spray should also be used. While many teachers think to spray desks and table, do not forget to also spray keyboards where student hands touch common areas. Telephones in offices where sick children call home should be spray or wiped several times a day. Door knobs should also be treated.

While there is no need to panic that your school might be next, there is also no harm in taking precautions. Even if the staph is not a concern, the cleaners can help with common cold and flu germs. Your room will also smell cleaner and more inviting.
