BROKEBACK THE MUSICAL
Hey, if they can do it for “Little House on the Prairie” then why not “Brokeback Mountain?”
The love story portrayed on the big screen will soon be revived and sung in one of the nation’s largest theaters thanks to the New York City Opera.
The group just commissioned Charles Wuorinen to compose the music for the opera, which will be based on the Academy Award-winning film. Much like the popular movie, which starred Jake Gyllenhaal and the late Heath Ledger, the opera will follow the 20-year love affair of two cowboys who share a secret romance in Wyoming during the 1960s.
Wuorinen says he has dreamed of setting Proulx’s work to music for years, but it was only within the past week that he learned that the New York City Opera was affording him the opportunity to make his fantasy a reality.
“Brokeback Mountain—The Musical” is set to premiere during the New York City Opera’s 2013 spring season.
LENO RESCUES MCMAHON
If Johnny Carson were alive he would have likely done the same.
Good ol’ Jay Leno is coming to the rescue of former “The Tonight Show” star Ed McMahon.
Now it appears McMahon will get to keep his mansion after all and he has his former boss’ replacement to thank for it. Leno just announced that he plans to assist McMahon and his wife pay the mortgage payments they missed.
According to Leno’s rep, “Everybody loves Ed. Jay and others on the show are discussing how they can help him.”
The 85-year-old, who injured his neck in a fall and has subsequently been out of work for 18 months, has been attempting to sell his $6.25 million home in Beverly Hills for the past two years, but the struggling real estate market has made it impossible to do so.
Leno is reportedly leading the charge to support McMahon and since the former late night announcer’s recent appearance on CNN several endorsement offers have come in.
According to McMahon’s rep, “A lot of people have shown generosity. Things are going to work out.”
