Typically when a celebrity is honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame people read speeches about how worthy he or she is and local dignitaries ramble on about how the community has prospered thanks to the star’s contributions, yada, yada, yada.
Well, when Ricky “Livin’ la Vida Loca” Martin accepted his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame earlier this week no one heard a word of those flowery speeches. That’s because anything anyone had to say on behalf of the sexy Grammy-winning singer was drowned out by thousands of shrieking female fans who wanted a piece of him.
According to news reports, a record number of fans waved Puerto Rican flags and kept screaming Martin’s name during the ceremony. Martin is one of Puerto Rico’s top-selling artists, who got his start in the 1980s with boy band Menudo.
Martin has sold more than 60 million albums as a solo artist and has also created the nonprofit Ricky Martin Foundation, which advocates children’s rights. Lately, he has spent much of his off-time speaking out against human trafficking, especially trafficking of children.
Soon two-legged celebs like Martin won’t be the only ones getting recognized for their achievements in the world of entertainment. Some furry and famous four-legged stars of the silver screen will soon get their own walk of fame in London.
Six dogs chosen by public vote will be among the first inductees. According to event organizers, the shortlist includes Lassie, Toto of “The Wizard of Oz,” cartoon superdog Gromit and Tintin’s trusty companion, Snowy.
The winners will be announced next month and will receive a permanent plaque in Battersea Park located in south London to show the world the important role dogs play in life. The park is situated next to Battersea Dogs Home, which is Britain’s largest and best-known home for abandoned dogs.
But, wait, there’s more.
The same people responsible for creating the Doggie Walk of Fame are also sponsoring the first-ever Fido awards later this month. The event is billed as the canine equivalent of the Academy Awards. Among the leading contenders are five corgis who starred alongside Oscar winner Helen Mirren in “The Queen.”
Woof!
