Now is as good a time as any to start planning your garden. Spring has a way of sneaking up on us, and before we know it, it will be dangerously close to planting deadlines in many areas. While you stay warm inside, start drawing up your plans and getting an idea of the things you’d like to see in your garden this year.
If you do venture outside for any length of time, grab a measuring tape on the way out. Measure the area you plan to use and any other areas you hope to turn into planting beds or flowerbeds. Write down the measurements, and if you’re really feeling motivated, create a scaled to size drawing of the garden and beds you hope to create.
Start writing down everything you will need. You might even want to start picking up a few things here and there. If you’re really ambitious, get some seeds going indoors and you’ll have your own starter plants instead of purchasing starters in the spring. Seeds are far less expensive and tending your plantings will give you something to do while you wait in anticipation for the time when you can actually begin working outdoors.
Don’t just stop at plants or flowers either. Consider the aesthetics of your garden. Do you plan to add decorative stone or stepping stones? Maybe you intend to add a small fence or a decorative border. Add these items to your scale drawing to see if the image aligns with you’re picturing in your mind. It’s much easier to make any necessary changes on paper.
Ask family members for their input too. See what kinds of plants, vegetables, trees, or flowers your kids might be interested in adding to the garden. Gardening is a great way to enjoy the outdoors and to get some fresh air and exercise, so if you include kids in the planning process, they’ll be more likely to join you outdoors. You’ll not only have a great garden but you might also get some extra quality time with your kids.
