Start the Day Right

Breakfast may be the most important meal of the day… but there are lots of other things you can do in the morning to start your day right.

  1. Make sure you sleep well the night before. The Families.com Health Blog is full of helpful hints to help you get a great night’s sleep!
  2. Keep your bedroom cool. Warmth makes it easier to nod off — but it also makes it easier to stay in bed. You may also wake up groggy in a warmer room. A cool room (between 60 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit) will help you wake up alert and refreshed. Try turning down the thermostat right before you crawl into bed so the room cools overnight.
  3. Don’t hit the snooze button. (I’m guilty of this many mornings!) Hitting the snooze button may make you feel like you’re getting more sleep, but your brain isn’t going into the deeper levels of rest. Waking up after the snooze may make you more tired than you would be if you got out of bed the first time the alarm goes off. Set your alarm for when you really need to get up and get out of bed when the alarm goes off. Try putting your alarm clock across the room so you physically have to leave bed to shut it off.
  4. Get your adrenaline going with a burst of color. Red, orange, yellow, and fuchsia are colors that can give you a surge of energy! Try adding a bright throw pillow to your bed or buy a robe in one of those colors. You could even include a bright glass of orange or cranberry juice with breakfast. Be colorful and creative!
  5. Physical activity — like a snuggle with your spouse — can shake off grogginess and boost good chemicals in your system.
