There’s something satisfying about starting something new. Whether you are writing a new document on a blank page, getting in the car to go somewhere that you have never been, or attending a class on something that you do not already know about, there is a certain energy that comes with embarking on new adventures. I am feeling it right now, as I prepare to dive into genealogy research.
That said, there are often other feelings that come with starting something new, such as the “this-is-so- complicated-what-was-I-thinking” feeling. I was feeling that last night as I looked online for guidance about how to begin studying my family’s history. It was a bit overwhelming at first because there is a lot of information about genealogy available. Some of it is geared towards people who are already familiar with genealogical research. However, there is also quite a bit of information out there for people who are not experienced genealogical researchers, but would like to begin learning about genealogy.
I went to bed last night without choosing where to begin. I was overwhelmed by all of the choices and simply could not decide. Today was different. I simply sat down, looked online for a minute and decided to start with this free, introductory lesson in genealogy. I mean, after all, if I get into it and do not find it helpful, I can try something else. If it is helpful, then I’ll begin learning about genealogy. I have nothing to lose by trying. Either way, I will be able to share my experience with you, so that you can decide whether it is something that you might like to try.
So far, I have read the course outline and FAQs. I really like that this is a self-paced course, because my schedule varies from week to week. I’m excited to make time for genealogy, but the amount of time may vary depending on my schedule. Also, I like that the homework assignments are optional. I’ll probably do most, if not all of the homework assignments, but it is nice to know that (unlike in grade school) I won’t be penalized if I miss one or two. Next time, you’ll hear all about how my first lesson went.
