Stay Away from BPA

We already know that BPA is dangerous. It has been linked to fertility problems, cancer, and sexual dysfunction in men, among other defects. There has been a big push to remove BPA from the plastics that we come in contact with every day. If you walk through the baby aisle, you’ll notice that most of the bottles are in packaging boldly marked, “BPA Free.” Many people have switched to using aluminum water bottles as a precaution as well. We know BPA is dangerous, and we have taken steps to protect ourselves and our families, but now we know more about why it is so dangerous in the first place.

According to research done at the Yale School of Medicine, exposure to BPA in the womb may cause lifelong problems and the reason has to do with permanent chemical alteration of DNA. The compound causes permanent abnormalities in the uterus of babies who are exposed in the womb and literally alters their DNA. BPA exposure triggers an exaggerated response to estrogen that lasts throughout adulthood. This heightened sensitivity to estrogen is what causes problems long after the initial exposure, such as cancer and infertility. Unfortunately, the damage is permanent.

To protect yourself and limit your exposure to BPA:

  • *Limit your consumption of canned foods and drinks, since the lining of these metal cans contain BPA.
  • *Store your leftovers in glass containers rather than plastic. Who doesn’t love Pyrex anyway?
  • *Filter your drinking water to remove traces of BPA that have been found in water.
  • *Use an unlined stainless steel bottle to carry your beverages.
  • *Switch your hard plastic utensils and other kitchen items with wooden, glass or metal versions.
  • *Take a folic acid supplement while pregnant, which may protect your baby against the effects of inevitable BPA exposure.
