Stay Cool and Chic in the Summer Heat

Another heatwave has passed… at least here at the Jersey shore. Three days of unbearable temperatures, with heat indexes well over a hundred degrees. It’s hard to feel good or look good when that sun is sapping your energy. Here are some tips to help you beat the heat and still look and feel fabulous!

  1. Drink plenty of water. This is a good idea all year round… but if you’re going to be sweating, your body will need to replenish those fluids somehow.
  2. Keep a folding fan in your purse or pocket. A fan is light, it doesn’t take up much space, and you can easily find one to match your outfit! A brightly patterned fan will spice up a plain tee-shirt and shorts.
  3. Put your lipstick on ice. Or your chapstick. Or whatever lip product you like to use. The folks at Clairol suggest a twenty minute chill for your lipstick before you apply. Unless, of course, you like the challenge of using a half-melted lipstick.
  4. Cool off your lotion, too. Keep your body lotion in the fridge for a delightfully cool rubdown after a hot day. The lotion will help keep your skin hydrated and supple, especially if you’ve been in the sun.
  5. Take lukewarm showers. A cooler water temperature in the shower will help minimize your pores and relax your sweat glands.
  6. Time your workouts for cooler parts of the day. The hottest part of the day is usually between 10am and 3pm. Exercise before 9am or after dusk to help your body stay cooler.
  7. Bare it all, but don’t forget the sunscreen. Protect your skin from sun damage with an SPF of 15 or higher.
  8. Watch those deodorant stains! If you’re going sleeveless, look for an “invisible” deodorant, rather than one that might leave tracks on your shirt. And be sure to pick a combination antiperspirant and deodorant to help control both wetness and odor.
