I started using an elliptical machine when I was a teenager. Now I am on my second machine and I still love it. Elliptical machines are a great addition for your at-home gym. They can seem a bit pricey but they last 5-10 years. The best thing is that it is great for days when you don’t want to workout outside. My elliptical has a built-in fan that is especially useful for hot days.
Here are some ideas to keep you motivated while working out on your elliptical machine. This can be applied to other indoor cardio machines as well.
Music is a great way to keep you motivated. Whether you play it through you iTunes account on your computer or your MP3 player, music can keep you from getting bored. When I was working out on my elliptical in high school it was located on our back porch. Back then we didn’t have MP3 players or even laptops, so I used a portable stereo. I tuned into my favorite station and off I went. Nowadays we have a lot more resources for music. I use a small iPod called a Shuffle that can clip to my shirt. This iPod was around $50 and holds enough songs for several workouts. For your playlist I suggest putting on your favorite songs that are upbeat and energetic. A great playlist will help you to stay motivated and keep you moving on your machine.
TV/Movies
Another great way to keep you on your machine burning those calories is watching a favorite show or movie. I set up my elliptical in a room that has a spare TV and DVD player. Prior to this my elliptical was in our office where I could use the computer to watch movies. If your elliptical is in the garage or back porch, you can invest in a small, portable DVD player to pop in your favorite movie. What I like about watching a movie or TV show while working out is that time passes quickly.
Magazines
Although reading while working out can be hard, I do find it nice to have some magazines on hand to flip through. My elliptical has a small shelf, a perfect place for putting magazines. After the show I am watching is done, I’ll look through a magazine. Fitness and Shape magazines are my favorites to glance over.
