Staying Safe on Vacation

left

You remembered to pack your toothbrush, wallet, passport and underwear, but before you head out on your dream vacation don’t forget to take along another travel essential: common sense.

Many people get so wrapped up in the excitement of traveling abroad that they neglect to exercise basic safety precautions. In order to make your trip of a lifetime something you won’t look back upon with regret, remember these simple tips:

Avoid shortcuts: If you are traveling in unfamiliar territory, don’t stray far from the beaten path. This is especially true if you are driving in a foreign country. Resist the temptation to travel along back roads or cut through secluded alleyways. Not only can you get lost by doing so, but you may also end up in a bad part of town and become subject to thieves.

Tour during the daylight hours only: Save your touring for when the sun is up, and sleep when the sun is down. It’s not a good idea to be sightseeing in the dead of night when lighting is restricted and seedy residents are out looking to prey on clueless tourists.

Watch what you say: It’s never a good idea to proclaim “I’m lost!” to your travel companion especially when you are in the middle of a crowded street or on a packed bus. Also, do your best to avoid stating, “Are you sure this is the right way?” or “We’re way off course.” Thieves can smell a confused tourist from a mile away and will try to make you his next victim if you are not careful. Even if you don’t know where you are going, pretend like you do. Don’t walk around aimlessly with an unfolded map in hand; rather. Instead, go into a shop to ask for directions. No matter where you are, you should walk with a confident gait and look like you are in control to avoid being preyed on by thieves.
