Stealing Peelies

Is is okay to take the peelie coupons off of the packages at the grocery store if you aren’t buying the item right then and there? People have all sorts of opinions on this one.

What are Peelies?

Peelies is the name for coupons that can be peeled right off of the packages of grocery store products and used instantly on that purchase. They off are in bright colors, such as yellow, to attract your attention, and bold words that say “Use Now” or “Instant Savings.” They are meant to entice you to buy the product by giving you the coupon to go with it. The idea is to peel off the coupon and use it at the register on your purchase.

The Problem with Peelies

The problem with peelies is that they are so easy to remove. This means that sometimes people practicing extreme couponing will go ahead and search the stores for multiple peelie coupons. They remove the coupons, bring them home and then match them up later to sales or use them in other stores.

This practice is a bit controversial in the couponing world. On one hand, some say it is wrong to take the peelie coupons if you aren’t purchasing the product right then and there. On the other hand, some say that coupons should be free for the taking and on a first come first serve basis.

My Opinion on Peelies

If I have to name on pet peeve right now as it lives to living frugally, I have got to say it is people who steal all of the peelies right out of the grocery store. So, allow me to vent for a bit, and don’t forget to share your own thoughts about the ethics of peelies on our Families.com Facebook page.

I will use peelies, but only if I am buying that product then and there. If I buy two products, then I am entitled to two peelies. No products, then no peelies. To me this is only fair and stems from the frustration of doing a coupon match up at home, only to discover that all of the expected peelies were already peeled off of the products.

Occasionally, I will run into a peelie that gives you money off of two products. I will then buy both products, use one peelie and save the other. I bought two products so I feel entitled to each peelie that is attached to the product I purchased.
