If you are trying to choose a weight loss regimen it can be mind boggling. Do you control your portions or your carbs? Do you go non-fat or just certain fats? Supplements? Alli? Or maybe just join a weight loss center? Perhaps you’re even considering something more drastic like surgery? How are you supposed to know which option is best for you? The simple answer is that you really can’t know which option is best until you try them and find one that works. It is a learning process.
However, I think by being honest with yourself and answering some questions, you can eliminate the trial and error process of losing weight and get onto the business of shedding those pounds. With that thought in mind, I’ve put together some questions to think through as you begin your weight loss journey.
Your First Stop on Your Journey to a Thinner You. . .
Needs to be your doctor’s office. Your doctor has access to your health records and will be able to advise you on the best way to lose weight. At my doctor’s office, there is even a nutritionist who will work with you to devise an eating plan around your unique needs. If you are considering more drastic options like weight loss surgery, your doctor will be able to discuss this with you as well.
The Guidelines for Providers of Weight Loss Products or Services
Unfortunately, there have been snake oil salesmen for centuries. It is just for such scams and fad diets that the Federal Trade Commission with the Partnership for Healthy Weight Management, published guidelines to help would be ‘losers’ to evaluate the program they are entering. You can access a list of the guidelines here. They are voluntary for providers, but weight loss programs who will follow them are definitely worth checking out. Their willingness to volunteer to follow the guidelines lets you know they really believe in their product rather than just making money.
