I love sticky notes. I have a collection of different sizes, shapes, and colors. I never thought about folding them though, until I saw Sticky Note Origami: 25 Designs to Make at Your Desk.
Origami has ancient roots, but using sticky notes to fold into different shapes is very new. The projects in this book utilize the sticky portion to allow for attaching the origami design to walls or computers or to attach the notes to one another to create larger designs. You won’t need special products, the designs use the three most common sizes of sticky notes.
The book begins by explaining origami terms, how to fold the paper, and how to follow the instructions. Some symbols tell the reader to turn the paper over, or sideways.
Some of the many projects are butterflies, a heart, a tiny basketball hoop you can attach to your desk, an alien face, a bearded Merlin, a two color flower, and a shaggy dog. Other projects are more complicated. The book includes some involved geometric designs that would make great Christmas ornaments or desk decorations. Some are basic structures like cubes or steps. Some, like the paradox cube and the tessellation, are more involved. The “circle of squares” project uses sixty-four sticky notes, but most projects only use one or two.
The book even includes projects to play with. These toys include a spinner that spins in your hands when you gently blow on it, airplanes, and a flextron. The flextron is a fascinating flexible toy that changes shapes and colors as you flex and bend it.
Sticky Note Origami has easy to follow color instructions and a photo of each finished design. The projects range from simple to complex. What fun it is to sticky a butterfly on an office mate’s filing cabinet. I have a feeling that our desks will never look quite the same.
