Still Flowering

I finally plucked up courage the other week to do as suggested by the orchid experts. I cut the flower spikes off my orchids and put them in a vase. Weeks later, they are still happily flowering.

Another lot of plants that have been flowering are petunias, in fact they have flowered all through winter and are still going. These petunias are self seeded petunias from the array we had last summer. They came up in the pots and garden of their own accord.

Unfortunately they got dug out of the garden thinking they were weeds, but because of a lot of wet weather we never got around to planting anything else in the pots. Now I’m glad.

Suddenly these little plants started to come up. Now I don’t know a lot about gardening, but I thought they were petunias, so we left them. Sure enough in autumn they started to flower and they have continued to follow all through winter and are still going in an amazing display of pink, purple, red and blue.

Sweet peas are another flower that you can save the seeds of and replant. Unfortunately with my husband being sick and a lot of wet weather that interfered with garden planting, we didn’t get our sweet peas in this year. I feel quite envious when I see my neighbor’s sweet peas. But at least I can enjoy looking at his. Interestingly rather than go for an array of colors his are all deep purple. I admit I like a variety of color though no white ones.

Like petunias and sweet peas, even though they are supposedly annuals, marigolds are another flower that will self seed. Buy them once and you should never have to buy them again. Just ,pluck the dead flowers off, keep the seeds and replant them at the appropriate time of year.

I like the variegated little marigolds which are also an excellent addition to the vegetable garden as because of their strong aroma they keep certain pests away. They also bring bees, which are good for any garden.
