It’s been nearly three months since the birth heard round the universe—Baby Suri Cruise was born on April 18th—or so we think. Since there has been no official sighting of Baby Cruise skeptics wonder if she exists at all.
US Weekly calls it the “baby mystery.” If Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise had a baby, why hasn’t anyone seen her? The magazine claims that friends such as Victoria Beckham, fellow Scientologists John Travolta and Kelly Preston, as well as Will Smith and “Collateral” co-star Jada Pinkett Smith, have yet to see the 2½-month-old infant.
Adding fuel to the fire is the fact that Suri was born on the same day and in the same hospital as Brooke Shields’ daughter, Grier. Baby Grier has since been repeatedly photographed cradled in the arms of her famous mom on the streets of Hollywood. Then, of course, who hasn’t seen the now infamous multi-million dollar pictures of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s newest addition, daughter Shiloh. What’s more, since the recent births of Gwen Stefani’s son Kingston James and Rachel Weisz’s son Henry Chance multiple pictures of the infants have been captured and published.
Since Suri’s birth Cruise and Holmes have spent most of their time at his Beverly Hills mansion. While the couple has been photographed together at local parks and publicity events, the baby has yet to be seen. Reporters following the birth of Baby Suri say this sudden drop from the public eye is in stark contrast to Cruise’s highly public courtship of Holmes, highlighted by his famous and much parodied couch-jumping moment on Oprah Winfrey’s show and the Paris news conference where they announced their engagement to the world.
“It’s strange that Tom would go from the one extreme of sharing every detail of his life to the other extreme of withdrawing from the public eye,” says celebrity-watcher, Rachel Weingarten. She adds, “Maybe Tom won’t show us the kid until he has another movie or DVD to promote.” Interestingly, there have been recent rumors speculating that Cruise, Holmes and their baby will appear on Oprah’s season opener in September. We’ll have to see about that.
In the meantime, perhaps, the family is just trying to get used to life as parents of a newborn. I know it took me at least three weeks before I was ready to venture out in public after giving birth to my daughter. When she was two weeks old the last place I wanted her to be was in a shopping cart schlepping through Wal-Mart. Also, remember that after he and ex-wife Nicole Kidman adopted their daughter, Isabella, in 1993 and son Connor in 1995, it wasn’t until after Connor’s second birthday, that the couple released a family photo to the media.
As for a picture of little Baby Suri…the wait continues….
