Stop Binge Eating – Part 1

Do you binge eat?  I know I do.  I’ll promise myself that this is it – I am going to stop eating so much and start exercising.  Next thing I know, I am sitting in my recliner, stuffing a pepperoni pizza in my face and watching television.  Not a good plan!

But, how can you stop it?  First, you need to realize that some dieticians frown on diets because they are not teaching you healthy lifestyle changes.  If you are thinking of going on the Atkins Diet and sit there thinking “I can never have another piece of bread, ever again,” guess what you are going to want?  And, saying “I am never going to eat [blank] again” isn’t really realistic to start with.

Some people can use diets to jumpstart healthy living, but most of us need to start slowly.  And, you may be tempted to binge on something you miss like ice cream, chips, or pizza.

I was on the diabetic diet for a while and I told myself (I am not really sure whether the diet said it or not) that I could have chips, but I would count them out.  A serving was like 10 chips, so I literally would count 10 chips out of the bag and say “That’s my limit.”  Not eating from a carton, bag, or box can help prevent binge eating.

Also, as I’ve mentioned before, using smaller plates and bowls.  If you put a scoop of ice cream in a ginormous bowl, of course it is going to look skimpy.  But, imagine that same scoop of ice cream in a smaller bowl.  It feels decadent and pleasing, but it is all in your mind – same amount of ice cream, you just feel better about it!

Tomorrow, I will address this topic again, with more hints and tips to stop you from binge eating!
