Meditation seems difficult, and it is common for people to have difficulty focusing in the beginning. However, once you give it a try, it becomes easier to quiet the mind and body to reap the benefits of meditation. There are several strategies you can try when meditating.
The simplest strategy for meditation is to focus on the breath. Align your thoughts with your breath and focus on the full inhalation and exhalation. Don’t try to shorten or lengthen the natural breath, just breathe easily and concentrate on it. When your mind begins to drift, come back to the breath.
As you can focus on your breath, you can focus on your body in the same way. Pay attention to how you are feeling in this moment. Are you hot or cold, at ease or stressed? Stay in the moment and don’t let your mind drift. If you begin to lose focus, return to awareness of the body in the moment.
Using a mantra can help you focus during meditation. A mantra is any word, phrase or sound that, when repeated, helps you to find a state of ease in meditation. When resting in the meditative state, you don’t need to continually repeat the mantra. When your mind starts to wander, you can return to the mantra whenever you need to regain focus.
Regardless of the strategy you use, there are some things you can do to prepare for, and enhance, your practice. set aside time for meditation each day and find a quiet and comfortable spot. This could be any room of your house, or even outside. Choose the place where you focus best.
Set aside about ten minutes at a time for your practice. Use a meditation cushion or pillow to enhance comfort and remember that meditation may not be easy in the beginning, but it is definitely worth the effort.
