Strays: Wings Beneath Their Fur

Do you know what I truly believe about strays and shelter animals? Especially ones that pick their people out like Aimee’s Miko did with her, Murph did with me and Wayne, and Rocky did with my friend Kim. Or how they wind up in our paths like Tabby did with me and Cujo did with my friends Christy and Christian.

I don’t believe any of this is coincidence. I believe Divine Intervention was at work. These animals were guided into our lives by a higher power. If you look closely enough, you’ll see what I mean.

There are wings beneath their fur. Angel wings.

These little fur balls (or big fur balls, as is also the case) aren’t the only ones who get saved. They become our protectors and saviors, too.

I stumbled across this quote by Pam Brown which succinctly states just one purpose many strays accomplish: “One small cat changes coming home to an empty house to coming home.”

Even though that quote’s about a cat, I believe the sentiment applies to all animals. If there are already other animals in residence, adding a stray to the clan changes the dynamic of the household by filling it with even more love.

Okay, so sometimes this isn’t always an instantly harmonious addition, as I learned with Tabby and Mr. Meow. It took them months to become friends.

But now that they’re partners in crime, it’s hard to believe there was a time they weren’t. And these days when night falls and I’m on my little couch with Mr. Meow beside me, Tabby’s either on her pillow or snuggled in Murph’s newest dog bed, and Wayne and Murph are sharing the big couch, I marvel at how much love surrounds us. Truly, it’s almost palpable.

And, yet, it’s only there because each one of our angels found their way into our lives. Rather, that I took the time to let them into our lives. In each of their cases, I could have just walked away. Just like Aimee could have or my friends Kim, Christy, and Christian could have.

But we didn’t. Maybe we didn’t fully see it at the time, or understand what was happening, but I bet if you ask any one of us now, we’ll tell you we see the wings beneath their fur and all the blessings they’ve graced upon us.

Ooops…did you hear that? It’s the flutter of furry wings beckoning me. Time to go love up my little angels.
