I know that as home business owners, many of us do not HAVE to be tied to a desk or stuck in one position for an entire work day. Unfortunately though, I do think that many of us don’t get up and move around when we are working as much as we should. Maybe it is because there are not coworkers to go visit or a break room to retire too. Unless we have young children to care for and several natural breaks in our work routine, we might actually get into a rut of being more stagnate than we would if we were working the more traditional job. It is up to us to remind ourselves to get up, move around, take breaks, stretch, and keep the blood flow and circulation moving through our bodies.
Ergonomics and general physical movement are still important—even if we don’t have a human resources department or have to comply to regulations imposed by an outside entity. Our bodies still need some variations and movement. I know that I can get so focused on work that I might sit in the same chair at my computer for several hours. It isn’t until my eyes blur, my head aches, and I start to get muscle cramps that I remember this is NOT a healthy choice—even if I am feeling productive on the work front.
Since we don’t HAVE to take any set breaks, we need to make sure we force ourselves to do it. Maybe fit in a walk or a gardening break in the middle of the day (or a few). Even running up and down the stairs or doing some stretching and yoga are beneficial activities for the work day. If you don’t have natural interruptions in your home business work day that keep you stretching and moving, make sure you work some in for optimal health AND overall productivity.
