According to Tripadvisor.com, more than 35 percent of Americans will be traveling during the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday. Of the people who are planning to leave town, more than one-third will fly, despite the sluggish economy and higher airfares. The remainder of travelers will take to the roads or the rails to get to grandma’s house for turkey and pie.
With millions of people getting ready to hit the highways to drive 500 miles or more during the holiday weekend, gas prices will be an issue. In addition, you will have to factor in hotel costs, especially if you can’t stomach sleeping on a leaky air mattress at your parents’ house following the Turkey Day celebrations.
In order to stretch your travel dollar this Thanksgiving, consider staying at Comfort Inn and Suites. The chain has more than 1,500 locations across the country featuring clean rooms, free hot breakfast and free Internet. Comfort Inn and Suites also offers savings for its Choice Privileges reward members. The program is free to join and gives guests 15 to 20 percent off rack rates if reservations are made and paid for in advance.
Omni Hotels and Resorts also allow travelers a way to save if they pay in advance and stay a minimum of two nights. Deluxe accommodations are reduced by 15 percent when paying in advance, including the chain’s family suites which feature large, colorful, child-friendly bedrooms stocked with toys.
Another way to save this Thanksgiving is to take advantage of hotel packages. One of the most popular comes courtesy of the Dream Downtown hotel in New York City. The “Make the Pilgrimage” package covers the entire Turkey Day experience for about $300. The deal includes a room with king-sized bed, complimentary hot cider/hot cocoa upon arrival, a three-course prix fixe dinner at Marble Lane restaurant, a metro card to get to the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, a viewing party for televised Turkey Day football games in hotel’s lounge, two free drink tickets, and leftover turkey and cranberry sauce sandwiches on challah bread to-go.
